DAVID SIMON
Jonathan recently photographed writer and producer David Simon — creator of The Wire, Treme, and The Deuce — for a feature in Der Spiegel. The assignment called for portraiture reflecting the two sides of Simon’s creative legacy: the former Baltimore Sun crime reporter with unmatched insight into American institutions, and the storyteller whose television work changed how the world views cities, systems, and the people within them.
Shot on location in Baltimore, the portraits lean into Simon’s no-nonsense presence with the same honesty and unvarnished realism that define his writing. The images emphasize environment as character — echoing Simon’s belief that place is never backdrop but narrative engine. For Der Spiegel, the series becomes not only a visual study of Simon, but an atmospheric extension of the themes central to his work: truth, accountability, and stories born from the margins.
