This Sporting Life
Developed in collaboration with Baltimore artist Arvay Adams (pictured right), Jonathan Hanson photographed a series of his custom embroidered sportswear. Rooted in vintage athletics and the broader history of American sport, Adams’ garments merge traditional craftsmanship including hand-painted flocking, patchwork construction, and classic embroidery methods. Drawing inspiration from historic athletes, overlooked cultural figures, and pivotal moments in sports history, Adams reinterprets familiar athletic iconography through a contemporary lens. The resulting pieces use sportswear as a medium to explore identity, cultural memory, and representation, while inviting viewers to engage with the deeper stories embedded within each garment.
